You’ve got to love the great old British holiday haven’t you?!
This was only because my last god knows how many holidays have been spent far away in Eygpt, Bali, Papua and Australia and more often than not I was enjoying a bit of scuba.
This was our first family holiday and as it happened I had a thoroughly awesome time kicking ass on the Go-Karting and bursting balloons at archery but there was one thing that truly horrified me and no it wasn’t the extortionate prices (that I will cover another day), no it was how fat our British public has become!
They should’ve really renamed the place Butt’lins!
What was worse though, for the first time I got to see real British families together and if it wasn’t bad enough to see fat dad and the mum with the 2 tonne bum it was to see their kids that hadn’t even reached puberty but were severely overweight already!
It was truly horrifying!
I mean, who does that to their kids? Do they not realise the damage they are doing to them? Do they know they are sentencing them to a slow death by pumping crap and empty calories into them day in day out!
I know that’s not what I will be doing with my daughter, or for that matter my one day to be step kids too…
no f***ing way!
I have too much love for them to do that!
Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not saying these parents do not love their kids, not at all. I’m just saying that they could do a lot better by them!
I know it’s not all the parents fault and I’m not going to put the blame entirely on them at all, not when the kids are constantly fed the need for cereals, McDonald’s, sweets etc through the media and clever marketing strategies. Then there is the fact that parents are pretty ill advised when it comes to food choices as the knowledge passed down to them through some seriously flawed myths and lies is not much help. Lies like dairy is an essential part of the diet, low fat/no fat is better for you, grains are good….man I could go on and on here but that’s a post or 2 for another day! Lastly food has become so expensive too, parents are forced to buy cheaper foods, fattier cuts of meat and more and more sugar and bad fat loaded processed foods which are no damn good for anyone apart from the greedy industries that make money from making the public fatter and more at risk to life threatening conditions!
Damn, this has developed into a bit of a rant, oopsie!!!
Anyways, back to Butt’lins.
After observing some of these parents and kids I noticed a pattern forming, they were involved in very little of the activities there. Well when I say activities I mean the physical ones, football, wall climbing, play parks or the ride on bikes you can hire for up to an hour to cycle around the vicinity. No the activities these kids and their families were into were eating, feeding the arcades and pretty much any activity that allowed their asses to be in contact with something!
It frustrated me to say the least!!
But what could I do? Not a lot really as I was miles away from home and on holiday!
What I could do though was spread the word of this horrific scene to those that would listen….
So hear I am and I’m not going to whisper,
I’M GOING TO SHOUT AS LOUD AS I CAN…
“PARENTS…DON’T LET YOUR KIDS GET FAT!!! LET THEM HAVE THE BEST START TO THEIR LIVES AS POSSIBLE!!!”
Gaining weight can lead to obesity, obesity can increase the risk of heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes….all of which are killers! Weight gain is brought on by sugar rich diets, too much sugar can lead to yes, you got it, heart disease, diabetes and cancer as well as life changing conditions like arthritis and Alzheimer’s too.
Is that really what you want for your kids? Shit, if you care for them that little you might as well just give them to special brew, a fag and a line of coke too and be done with it!
Okay, maybe I’m being a little too dramatic or over the top here but it’s something I’m very passionate about!
I don’t like seeing overweight kids.
I want to see healthy, happy kids. Kids running around parks, skate boarding, playing football, riding bikes and doing what kids do best, not slowly getting fatter by eating junk and spending their days attached to a sofa or computer.
So how do you change this, no, how do we change this?
Get these kids doing something physical everyday. It doesn’t take much to go for a walk, a cycle ride or to toss a Frisbee does it?!. Neither is it hard to kick a ball, throw a ball or even hit a ball for an hour and failing the ability to do that there’s always swimming or even joining a club isn’t there?!
Serve smaller portions, if they are still hungry after then use fruit or nuts instead of the empty calories of sweet treats.
Reduce or even better, eliminate grains/wheat from their diet.
Grains = sugar = weight gain as the body can only store a certain amount of sugar and anything more than that will get stored as fat! Grains are bread, cereals, cakes, biscuits, rice, pasta…man some kids are probably getting 3 meals a day crammed with that stuff, right?
Limit the sweet treats!
I’m not just meaning just the haribo’s here, I’m meaning the cakes, biscuits, ice creams, desserts, crisps, fizzy and flavoured drinks etc. A treat every now and then is fine and keeps us all feeling happy but everyday? And more than once a day too? Is it really necessary? The answer is No!
“Everything in moderation, especially moderation” Mark Twain
We should ALL be eating at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. Ideally 3 portions of veg and 2 fruit, even better would be 5 portions of veg and 3 portions of fruit with 2 of them being from darker skinned berries.
Have protein at meal times.
Protein is the building blocks of life and an essential part of the diet. Great sources of protein are meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, beans, seeds and dark leafy greens so ensure these are in every meal.
And adults, you need to get more exercise too!
Exercise not only helps to burn fat but if also helps to strengthen the organs and keep them working optimally! If you don’t look after your body it won’t look after you! So from today start doing something physical…move more, walk or cycle instead of drive, takes the stairs instead of the lift, lift something heavy once a week and sprint every now and then. Do this whilst following these simple nutritional steps for 1 week and watch the weight come off!
1. Eliminate alcohol
2. Eliminate refined sugar
3. Eliminate processed foods
4. Eliminate wheat and gluten (grains)
5. Eliminate caffeine
6. Limit dairy
Believe me on this when I say you feel so much better for it
In fact, you will benefit from
* Better digestion
* Enhanced sleep
* Increased energy
* No more mid-afternoon slumps
* A SLIMMER WAISTLINE!!!
Apply this with the exercise tips and you will feel truly awesome!

Well my little tale went a little off track there slightly didn’t it.
Still I had a great time at Butlins despite some of the not so pleasant sights and I know I’m sure to go back when my little munchkin is a little older so she can enjoy it all too.
Thank you for reading my post and if you enjoyed it then I would be honoured if you would leave a comment or share with your friends on any one of the social media sites.
